A GATHERING OF TOOP AND PESHAWAR CIRCLE: EXPLORING” THE DARK SIDE OF JOURNALISM” BY Dr. IRFAN ASHRAF AT PESHAWAR LIBRARY.

In the modern era of technological advancement, “The Order of Pen” (TOOP) shines brightly as a source of inspiration and artistic expression within the literature realm. Through its steadfast commitment to the written word, TOOP hosts captivating poetry competitions, engaging book discussion sessions, storytelling sessions, and creative writing sessions.

As per its tradition, TOOP continued its invaluable contributions to the world of literature by orchestrating a gathering at the Peshawar Public Library on September 9, 2023. This event was dedicated to the discussion of the newly published book, “The Dark Side of Journalism,”  by Dr. Syed Irfan Ashraf. He is an Associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Peshawar.

This masterpiece book, “The Dark Side of Journalism: The Cultural and Political Economy of Global Media in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” delves deeply into the intricate and often unsettling role of fixers in the context of war situations, with a particular focus on KPK and Afghanistan.

Fixers typically local individuals with a profound understanding of the region and its languages, assist foreign journalists with otherwise inaccessible news.  Holistically, the book theme centers around a power struggle over stories in a state of war.

Haseeb Sajjad, organizer of Peshawar Circle, who has completed a BS in English and an MA in Political science, skillfully and adeptly moderated the session, deftly creating a profound connection between the audience and the esteemed speaker, Dr. Irfan Ashraf.

The event commenced with a brief introduction and summary of the book, followed by an elucidation of concepts crucial for comprehension of the discussion. Digging deep into the solemness of the work, the author provided the rationale for contributing such an important write-up to journalistic literature. Underscoring the role of fixers in reference to current journalism scenarios, Dr. Syed Irfan Ashraf conversed profoundly about the history of fixers. Throughout the event, a multitude of thought-provoking inquiries were posed to Dr. Ashraf, to which he responded with marked exceptional clarity and a captivating sense of intrigue.

As the session drew to a close, Noman Saleem, the CEO of THE ORDER OF PEN (TOOP), had the distinct privilege of meeting with the esteemed speaker. During this encounter, he presented a gift to Dr. Irfan Ashraf. Moreover, a memorable group picture was taken, serving as a fitting commemoration of the event.

At the end of the session, an overview of Toopistan’s opus operandi was shared with the participants.  Students from various academic backgrounds with diverse talents and desires jumped to the Toopistan’s desk. The founder, Muhammad Noman Saleem both encouraged and appreciated students for their interest in such literary events.
