Science fiction is a genre that shows promise when it comes to deconstructing the notion: Science and Arts are poles apart. Short stories (and other pieces of literature) written in this genre of fiction are treats for readers. People tend to lose all sense of time when met with a good sci-fi short story! (We’re speaking from personal experience here!). ”When Science Found God” is a must read for all the Sci-Fi geeks out there.
From the Higgs particle to other quantum terminologies, this short story will not only broaden your horizon of knowledge, but will also make you question your current understanding of science’s relationship with theology, spirituality and religion.
The writer has chosen to textualize the story in a 1st person narrative. It is intriguing how the story shows a smooth glide from the narrator’s I-don’t-care-much-when-it-comes-to-religion attitude, to a one which brims quite a lot with: I-wonder-why-did-I-not-care-about-religion-that-much?
We’re met with a lot of biblical references in the first paragraph of the story, which might be an indication of the fact that the writer of this wonderful piece may be a believer in the idea of God (Which is quite optimistic, we love us some optimism!) or at least an ardent fan of studying theology if nothing else.
The most goose-bump inducing foreshadow in the initial paragraphs of the story is:
The protagonist is a physics graduate, and we’re given the picture that she is quite rational in her worldview, especially when it comes to religious opinions. The story is given its eerie-ness by the element of our protagonist being an agnostic at the beginning.
A quantum experiment happening in the lab that the protagonist is working in is what sets the plot in motion. The experiment leads to creation of the ‘God Particle’, which eventually creates gloomy horrors in the lab.
There are characters who age backwards and die (What a weird way of dying right?!), and rays that seem to hit the perfect targets!
The story will make you fear computers, technology, scientific advancements AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOO! (Which isn’t too bad erm? TOTALLY IS! JK!)
