The letter.

Did you know that a flame casts no shadow
Even if you hold it to the strongest light?
No, I didn’t think you would.
But it’s a thought that came to me.
And so I thought to tell you.
It’s the same with a loving memory.
It has no shape or form, but it lights the mind up like a sun.
But when a hateful thought passes next to it,
It casts a shadow that pierces the whole galaxy
And makes eternity much darker.
Your shadow fell upon my page tonight.
I looked away and pretended not to
notice.
But I can see where it had slithered.
For there, the words now lie crosswise.
And the paper feels dry and burns my
skin.
It’s after midnight now.
I know you’ll never receive my letter,
But I thought I’d write it all the same.
