A rainbow bouquet
of smiling-faced balloons bobs
against the night sky.
Bright lights glaring in
the dark town hint that life there
is fun, exciting.
But below, the tired
balloon man sits slumped against
the bare concrete bridge.
No sales for him on
this deserted road at night;
no cheerful home waits.
A featureless, dark
figure, he’s anonymous
and solitary.
His reality
is a poignant contrast to
the false gaiety.
He reminds us that
for many, life means sorrow,
want, and loneliness.
